Greenville, SCMany people are unaware of the seriousness of addiction and abuse of alcohol and drugs.  This problem is widespread in large communities and small.  So, what about Greenville, South Carolina?  The facts in this article reveal that, in our own city, addiction is destroying lives and costing untold misery to individuals, their families, and all who know and care about the addict.

This Month In Greenville:
180,000 will abuse drugs
200 people will try drugs for the first time
58% of teens consumed alcohol at least once
17 people will be killed in an accident involving alcohol or another drug
This Week In Greenville:
1,200 8th graders will binge drink
1 person will die of a drug overdose
43% of traffic fatalities were DUI related
1,415 teens will ride in an automobile with an intoxicated driver
Today In Greenville:
1 person in 9 residents need help for a substance abuse problem
165 people will be arrested for substance abuse related offenses
The average age of first time drug use is between 10 and 12 years of age
Alcohol or other drugs will be the leading factor in the death of people, ages 15 to 24
Summary:
According to The Children of Alcoholics Foundation, children of addicts are 3-4 times more likely than others to become addicted to alcohol or other drugs themselves.  Addiction to alcohol and other drugs facilitates domestic violence, homelessness and crime, as well as the spread of HIV/AIDS and STD’s, while negatively affecting scholastic achievement, work place productivity, the cost of insurance and medical treatment, and the perception that Greenville is a safe place to live, work, and visit.
